A well-heeled man approaches the counter. Smiling, he places his order and steps neatly aside to watch the performance that is the preparation of his ice cream.

“He was here yesterday. In fact, he was here twice yesterday,” says Syed Haizam Jamalullail. He beckons the cashier who handled the transaction over and they confer briefly. It emerges that said customer has visited twice daily in the past week — his sweet tooth enviously isn’t apparent on his trim build — and tries new flavours each time, with this afternoon’s choice being a scoop of French vanilla in a cone.

It is impressive that Haizam remembers this gentleman — the Cold Stone Creamery outlet at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur saw a steady wave of customers in the past hour alone. It is just after lunchtime and the crowd, hot and hungry for something cool, are delighted that dessert comes with a show. A trademark of this US ice cream parlour chain is the theatrical presentation of its make-your-own combinations on a frozen granite slab. Scoops are tossed high into the air and caught with flair and the staff regularly break into song, all part of the promised “ultimate ice cream experience”. Popular Signature Creations include the Birthday Cake Remix (cake batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, brownie bites and fudge) and Founder’s Favourite (sweet cream ice cream with pecans, brownie bites, fudge and caramel).
