Arahmaiani — Song of the Rainbow
Regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the field of performance art in Southeast Asia, Indonesian contemporary artist Arahmaiani unveils a suite of new acrylic paintings from her ongoing Jawi script series that began in 1993. Over the years, Arahmaiani utilised and explored the syncretic underpinnings of the series to discuss a broad range of social concerns and highlight the Javanese archipelago’s historical tolerance and respect for diversity. The brightly coloured depiction of the Jawi script portrays a sense of non-violence to counteract the increasingly harsh perception towards the Islamic faith and practice.
Richard Koh Fine Art, 229 Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, KL. Nov 7-23. For more info, see here.
