The fifth edition of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize has just announced the 30 shortlisted artists. Each finalist will have the opportunity to have his/her work displayed at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art from July 1 to 30.
Established as a private cultural foundation in 1988 by Enrique Loewe, the prize continues to promote and protect cultural heritage in craft, design, photography, poetry and dance, as well as to organise educational programmes. The foundation was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts by the Spanish government in 2002.
The panel for this year’s edition of the competition has chosen a range of art pieces that are modern and contemporary interpretations of centuries-old tradition. The artists have delved into the intricate histories, mastering ancient techniques using unique materials and applications. The selected works explore themes such as humanity’s connection to the natural world and geometry in natural form.
The finalists were chosen from 3,100 submissions from 116 countries and regions by a panel of experts. They represent 15 countries, with works ranging across mediums such as ceramics, woodwork, textiles, leather, basketry, glass, metal, jewellery and lacquer, that will be documented in a catalogue.
“Craft is the essence of Loewe,” said creative director Jonathan Anderson at the awards inception in 2016. “As a house, we are about craft in the purest sense of the word. That is where our modernity lies, and it will always be relevant.”
