For 2020 and 2021, the L’Oréal Foundation has recognised six Malaysian women scientists for their work and contributions. These women have pushed the boundaries of science and made a great difference in their field.
To encourage more women to take up studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the winners receive the L’Oréal-Unesco Fellowship for Women in Science Young Talents Programme Award as well as an endowment of RM30,000 each.
The 2020 winners of the national programme had the best research in fighting global warming, enabling a reduction of our carbon footprint and lowering carbon emissions to combat climate change.
The winners are Datin Dr Rozzeta Dolah, who reduced the carbon emissions of petrol vehicles using nanotechnology; Dr Goh Pei Sean, whose research involves separating carbon dioxide from its source with a membrane filtration system to dismantle the carbon emitted; and Dr Umi Fazara Md Ali, whose work focuses on fundamentals and applied separation processes such as wastewater treatment and carbon dioxide adsorption using ionic liquids.

The 2021 award winners made medical breakthroughs in science: Dr Cindy Teh Shuan Ju’s research focuses on fighting the antimicrobial resistance of superbugs; Dr Felicia Chung has found a way to determine cancer cells by looking into DNA mutations; and Dr New Siu Yee has dedicated her time to discovering efficient ways to construct a new generation of DNA Biosensors.
