Winter in the largest city in Australia is bright, colourful and fascinating, thanks to the Vivid Sydney Festival, now in its 10th year. From May 25 to June 16, the city will be abuzz and ablaze with illuminated projections and huge installations, theatre and music performances, food events and talks.
Synonymous with the festival are the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House, which will become a gigantic backdrop for Jonathan Zawada’s Metamathemagical, an art and sound show of kinetic digital sculptures built around Australian motifs. Lighting up the Sails is part of Vivid Light, which will also see the Royal Botanic Garden, Luna Park, Barangaroo, the Chatswood CBD, Kings Cross and Taronga Zoo splashed with lighting displays, laser shows and luminescent creatures.
Vivid Music has Grammy award-winning St Vincent on the line-up, as well as Curve Ball. Jazz will rule at The City Recital Hall with Innovators in Jazz, Branford Marsalis and vocalists Kurt Elling and Madeleine Peyroux. Over at the Sydney Opera House, Vivid Live will present shows by Solange, Mazzy Star, Ice Cube, Dreams and Cat Power. The Town Hall is the venue for the inaugural Heaps Gay Qween’s Ball.
US filmmaker James Cameron will be at the festival for the launch of his James Cameron — Challenging the Deep exhibition, and talk about his passion for science and technology. Vivid Ideas will see industry experts exploring creative concepts and innovations aimed at making our future brighter. They will also debate the future of work, the ethics of humanising technology and how to become agents for change.
