Everyone deserves a chance to make their dreams come true. The Krishen Jit Fund, supported by Astro and Creador Foundation, aims to empower and encourage creative practitioners in the arts sector. Established in 2006 as a celebration of late theatre pioneer Datuk Krishen Jit, this fund honours his passion for propelling original Malaysian arts forward by providing monetary aid to uplift creative endeavours. In its 19th edition, grants given this year, amounting to RM51,000, were awarded to six recipients who showed determination and grit in their respective fields.

Architect and visual artist Syarifah Nadhirah received RM12,000 for an environmental project called “Roots and Ruins” that serves to foster a deeper understanding of native trees within the Klang Valley. Film producer Haziqah Azemi (above) proposes a story about imprisoned Muslim women who are pregnant out of wedlock in Kelantan.

Writer Sharifah Aleysha (below) has a video essay documenting two artists’ journeys to find people they loved and lost. Hasbe Zuraini, an educator, seeks to provide students with disabilities who have sensory integration issues to experience theatre performances. Filmmaking graduate Jacky Yeap received RM6,000 for his 60-minute experimental film exploring on the dynamics of viewership. Last but not least, Sarawak-born filmmaker Cheryl Lisa Haddy is set to direct a comedic student film focusing on a feisty little girl committed to proving to her mother that she cannot be controlled.

The grants were given out to the six individuals on Nov 27, continuing a legacy of inspiring those who will contribute to the arts industry at the Five Arts Centre in GMBB, KL.
