At times, we’ve let reading slip to the margins of our life because there aren’t many well-edited bookstores around us. In the last few years, though, there are signs of independent bookstores making a comeback — some located in neighbourhoods to better service the local community.

BookXcess, now a proud anchor to many suburban malls, entices us away from our screens and into a space surrounded by an eclectic selection of affordable books and, sometimes, out-of-print titles. To encourage more people to pick up the habit of reading again, the book purveyor launched Malaysia’s first 24-hour bookstore in Cyberjaya.

Yesterday, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, wife of PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, officiated the launch of the Cyberjaya branch located at Tamarind Square, which comprises an expansive area of 37,000 sq ft.

Having opened its doors in May, the BookXcess in Cyberjaya — also the brand’s seventh outlet after its inception in Amcorp Mall in 2006 — stocks more than half a million books of various categories including non-fiction, history, home decor and cooking.

The launch also coincided with BookXcess’ Priceless Gift campagin, a social initiative to reach out to underprivileged children though books. Siti Hasmah handed over a donation of RM5,000 worth of books to SJKC Union, Cyberjaya and  Sekolah Kebangsaan Cyberjaya.

BookXcess is also available at The Starling, Fahrenheit88, BookXcess XS One Utama, SS15 Courtyard and Centro Mall, Klang.
