The magic of young love reminds us of that awkward dance toward a relationship. Yasmin Ahmad’s beloved film Sepet — a poignant tale between a 19-year-old Chinese DVD seller and a bright Malay schoolgirl — wooed us 15 years ago while helping us relive a bit of our youthful amor.
Bringing back wistful memories of a more innocent time before heartbreak in the digital age is the stage adaptation of Yasmin’s masterpiece film.
For those who missed out on Sepet The Musical, which ran for three sold-out weekends last September, the production will be streamed for free on Liver & Lung Productions’ YouTube channel starting May 1 on 9pm.
Starring Joshua Gui and Badrika Bahadur as Jason and Orked respectively, the 90-minute show will be available online until May 9, providing families with a post-Iftar treat this Ramadan. Moreover, a live talkback session will be held on May 2 at 9pm with the creative team.
The Malaysian-British theatre company behind the Malaya Relived anthology partnered GMBB (a creative hub in Bukit Bintang) to bring Yasmin Ahmad’s iconic film to life last year, highlighting to us once more of the mounting social pressure and struggles faced by interracial couples.
“Last year, we were honoured to pay homage to this iconic film and were elated that Malaysians were happy with the outcome. We saw people from all walks of life come and watch the show and they all took something away from it,” said Shafeeq Shajahan, founder of Liver & Lung and director of the musical.
“Tapping into the magic that Yasmin Ahmad created was incredibly humbling. People were in tears every night. We had something incredible in our hands,” he added. “The vision for Sepet The Musical was to stay authentic to its source material and reignite the film’s narrative for a new generation of Malaysians.”
Sepet The Musical is not the only show available on Liver & Lung’s YouTube channel — theatre fans can also check out other digital theatrical content on the video streaming platform, as well as a special Covid-19 podcast that celebrates creaitivty and imagination, Finding Fabulous, that’s available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
