BMW is partnering non-profit organisation The Ocean Cleanup, providing mobility solutions for its founder, Boyan Slat, and his team in the coming 12 months. The support is in the form of BMW i3s that provide 100% electric mobility for the organisation, which is developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. The up-to-95% recyclable BMW i model meets the philosophy of The Ocean Cleanup, making it a good choice of company car for the organisation. “We are also pushing the boundaries of sustainability, even beyond the car. We are delighted to support The Ocean Cleanup because we share the same mindset,” says Dr Robert Irlinger, head of BMW i.
Dubbed the largest clean-up in history, the organisation predicts that 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch could be cleaned every five years. Its cleaning system consists of a 600m tube that floats on the water with a tapered, three-metre long “skirt” underneath, which prevents plastic from flowing over it. Wind and waves drive the system, allowing it to move faster than the plastic and trapping the waste.
