It was 1969 when TAG Heuer launched the recognisable watch as a tribute to the Monaco Grand Prix. But it wasn’t until 1971 when Steve McQueen wore it in the movie Le Mans that its popularity flourished.

As the world’s first waterproof automatic chronograph with a square case, the Monaco was commended for its unique design and groundbreaking technology. Complete with two white counters at nine and 3 o’ clock, this timepiece even had a large red chronograph second hand that’s accurate to a fifth of a second. As a show of how the chronograph never needs winding, the crown was even moved to the left side of the case.

Over the years, TAG Heuer has released many different editions of this eye-catching watch, including the Monaco V4, Monaco 73633G, Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition and, our personal favourite, Monaco Men’s Club Japan watch. Its unusual shape and design often attract new watch lovers to the brand.

TAG Heuer’s heritage director Catherine Eberle- Devaux, who curated the brand’s heritage pieces, says, “To me, the Monaco is a door to the TAG Heuer brand. It’s a piece that catches your eye and invites you in. Many collectors start with the Monaco and then are drawn into our world, eventually finding another collection to focus on, but always cherishing the piece that started it all.”

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Monaco, the Swiss watchmaker will be bringing a carefully curated exhibition of their heritage timepieces from TAG Heuer’s museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds to Pavilion KL’s concourse from April 22 to 28. Showcasing iconic models that tell the rich history of TAG Heuer, the display highlights the brand’s penchant for innovation and skilled craftsmanship.
