Inspiration and savoir-faire join hands again with the opening of Beyond Boundaries: Cartier and the Palace Museum, at the Meridian Gate Gallery of the Palace Museum in Beijing on June 1.
The exhibition, which runs until July 31, invites visitors to travel through time and space to explore the cultural connections between treasures from the East and West. It is a bond reflected by the friendship and mutual exchange between the French jewellery maison and China’s cultural institution.
Beyond Boundaries will feature more than 850 pieces gathered from the Cartier Collection and the brand’s archives, the collections of the Palace Museum and public institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Australia, Qatar Museums and the Musée international de l’horlogerie, La Chaux-de-Fonds. There are also pieces from private and royal collections.
It comes a decade after Cartier Treasures, held at the same venue located at the south entrance of the Forbidden City. The exhibition is built around three themes: Cartier and China (the influence of Chinese art on Cartier creations; Royals (aristocratic jewellery from the European courts); and Cartier Time (timepieces from the Imperial Collection and the maison).
Visitors can look forward to an immersive experience within the spatial layout of Meridian Gate Gallery, where scenographer Nathalie Crinière interprets the themes by playing with motifs created by the calligrapher’s brush stroke.
Admission to Beyond Boundaries: Cartier and The Palace Museum is free, but visitors have to buy a ticket to enter the Palace Museum. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8.30am to 5pm (the ticket counter closes at 4pm). Closed on Mondays, except for national holidays.
Tickets are priced at RMB60, with a 50% concession for visitors aged 60 and above. Free admission for children under 1.2m in height.
