Inflatable puffer jackets are not exactly novelties. Two years ago, A$AP Rocky was spotted on the streets wearing a bright yellow one from Balenciaga, while fellow rapper Drake stepped onto the Coachella stage sporting a similar shade. Designers are building off the inflatable trend, although no one took it as literally as Projek Jahat did.
A model, clad in red from top-to-toe with a life jacket clinging to her neck, strutted down the runway at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) yesterday. The groundbreaking 12-piece collection was created in partnership with AirAsia Foundation (AAF), the philanthropic arm of AirAsia Group that helps to build an Asean community by advocating social entrepreneurship, equal opportunity and innovation.
Named GOOD/jahat, the collection is made entirely from repurposed materials, from blankets and seat leather, sourced from AirAsia’s warehouse. The goal is to start a new conversation about upcycling. “These are not viewed as items to salvage but a treasure trove that excites their imagination as designers,” says AAF executive director Yap Mun Ching.
Projek Jahat, a conceptual design house inspired by creativity and youthfulness, is no stranger to sustainable fashion. During KLFW last year, curator Mohd Faizul Isa showcased a collection of various upcycled denim pieces, earning him media accolades as the “most eye-catching designer” of the year.
“We want to show that nothing is waste. You just need to refresh it with new ideas. This time, we applied our interpretation of sharing economy principles to create a collection that adapts to the wearer, regardless of gender or size,” he said.
To promote the importance of making mindful fashion choices, all pieces from the collection will be available for purchase at Destination: GOOD, AAF’s flagship social enterprise shop in KL. The store – housed at REXKL, formerly the iconic Rex Cinema – retails more than 400 ethically produced goods sourced from over 30 social enterprises in Asean.
