In conjunction with BookXcess’ 13th anniversary, the alternative bookstore aims to donate a total of 13,000 new English books under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm, Red Readerhood. Until November 18, the campaign will channel all books to the latter’s collaborating non-governmental organisations, which include The Book Effect, SOLS 24/7 and Buku Jalanan Chow Kit.
The Book Effect is a project under Friends to Mankind while SOLS 24/7 is an award-winning humanitarian organisation established by Malaysian founder Raj Ridvan Singh. Lastly, Buku Jalanan Chow Kit is an initiative that has helped underprivileged children to escape the cycle of poverty in Chow Kit area.
Andrew Yap, co-founder of BookXcess, hopes that the gesture will inspire a new generation of young readers, especially in the wake of the current pandemic.
“Knowledge accessibility will insinuate hope within the hearts and minds of those in need and we are helping to build a new generation of intellects who will eventually carry the responsibility of building a better nation and society in the future.”
BookXcess has always aspired to make books accessible to all, with the hopes of increasing English literacy. Co-founder of BookXcess Jacqueline Ng reinstates the mission of Red Readerhood, a firm believer that everyone regardless of status should have access to acquire knowledge through reading.
“Through Red Readerhood, brand-new English books are collected and donated to the underprivileged through a local organisation in support of their cause. With all the technology that exists in this day and age, people forget the value of a good book and how far literacy has taken the world.”
The public can also play a part in this five-month-long donation drive. Purchase new books at BookXcess outlets nationwide, and the bookstore will match each donation by the customers to hit the 13,000 book goal.
To encourage more people to pick up reading, BookXcess is offering sales at the Lucky Corner where all books are priced at RM13 (customers also receive complimentary membership with every purchase above RM13), instead of the usual minimum amount of RM100. Customers who spend a total of RM130 will receive a tote bag and members with minimum spending of RM200 will get 13% off for their next purchase
With Merdeka celebrations just around the corner, bibliophiles can participate in the #BookXcess13Years until August 31 to stand a chance to win a bookshelf filled with books.
