Often, audiences like and remember a song or dance because an artiste puts his heart into making it come alive. Musical Treasures will do more than that this weekend. A 50-strong cast will step up to perform timeless favourites for a special purpose – to save lives.
Their three shows at Menara KEN TTDI on Jan 18 and 19 will raise funds for Cancer Research Malaysia, specifically to improve the survival rates of Asian cancer patients. Last year, CRMY launched a mobile mouth screening app that enables users to capture images of suspicious oral lesions. It has developed a peptide-based vaccine that trains the immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells, which will enter first-in-human clinical trials.
Helming Musical Treasures is choreographer-dancer dancer Farah Sulaiman, with Sabrina Hassan directing and Alesia Dhana as vocal coach.
In 2023, Farah partnered CRMY to produce Get On Your Feet, which raised funds to support the operational expenses for two of its researchers for one year.
This time, fans can look forward to hits from A Chorus Line, Hello Dolly, Mama Mia!, Beetlejuice, Hamilton, The Sound of Music, and the uplifting A Hundred Million Miracles from Flower Drum Song. Alam and Dikir Meminang, two numbers from musical theatre Rubiah, are also on the programme.
Singer/actress Ning Baizura and entertainer Datuk Leonard Tan, aka “Maestro of a Thousand Voices”, will lend their talents to the good cause at the gala evening on Jan 19.
CRMY, established in 2000, has 70 researchers whose work is entirely supported by grants and donations. There will be another fundraiser to mark its 25th anniversary -- Life is Funny Too, a comedy scheduled for Feb 23.
Donations for the matinee performances of 'Musical Treasures' (Jan 18 & 19, 3pm), start at RM80. The gala night pass (Jan 19, 8.30pm) starts at RM150. Call 012 680 8330 for ticket enquiries or buy here. For corporate sponsorship, contact Joanne Sim at [email protected] or 012 326 6862.
