Samsung Electronics writes a new chapter in its technological legacy, this time with an S-Pen that is included in the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. The S21 Ultra was the first Galaxy S phone to support the stylus, which has been the default companion of the Note line for years, but it had to be purchased separately. With Samsung’s premium flagship inheriting most of the Note’s salient qualities including a dedicated silo to store its mighty pen, the idea of updating the much-favoured Note model is as good as shelved.
Having said that, 2022 is still a banner year for Samsung after all as its top-of-the-line S series offers a suite of breakthrough features, bolstered with the functionality of the Note you already know and love. Touting a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a nifty feature called Nightography that brings new depth and detail to photography and videography, as well as battery life that lasts over a day, the S22 Ultra with 6.8-inch (in) display is slated to be the most powerful device the South Korean phone maker has ever created.
Blending form and function in thoroughly sleek fashion has always been Samsung’s design ethos, and the S22 Ultra exudes the same business-class charisma with integrated camera lenses and a sleek metal frame that creates a mirrored effect. An evolutionary facelift to its predecessor S21 Ultra, the S22 Ultra eliminated the camera bump housing, sporting luxurious glass and haze finishing for a streamlined linear, floating layout — complete with the Note’s signature sharp angles. As durable as it is striking, the S22 Ultra comes in four nature-inspired colours, namely Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and new-on-the-device Burgundy.
The performance department shows no sign of lagging as the S22 family in Malaysia is now powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor instead of the Exynos 2200 chip. Better connectivity, power efficiency and response speeds are not the only merits shared among the models within the series — they also benefit from the aforementioned AI-assisted Nightography, which produces footage that is instantly post-worthy since it automatically chooses the ideal frame to capture as much light and detail as possible even in the dimmest condition. The S22 Ultra is also equipped with the Super Clear Glass lens to help you take smoother and clearer night-time shots without flares, while its video Auto Framing always ensures your camera keeps your subject in focus, whether it is one person or 10.
If you are currently only using your phone to capture selfies and quick videos, the enhanced camera on the S22 Ultra may just help you shoot the next Sundance winner. Content creators or even digital nomads who work remotely using Zoom in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic will benefit from the front and back cameras — whether you are recording during the day or night. The premium all-rounder outshines its more affordable stablemates in more ways (or five cameras in this case) than one. Although the 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera remains unchanged from last year’s phone, the telephoto lens resolution has been downgraded to 3x zoom with a 10 megapixel sensor (the S21 was 64-megapixel). Improvements, however, have been made to take night-mode portraits and capture high-resolution night-mode shots (doing both at once was not feasible previously). The result is a 108-megapixel image that incorporates the added light-gathering benefits of pixel-binning technology.
Built for versatility, this suave multitasker also features Wi-Fi 6E, which means you can enjoy unrivalled performance on all your favourite apps, be it when you are gaming, lounging the day away with a movie marathon or working for long hours. Packing a whopping 5,000mAh battery, it can be charged wired or wirelessly. To put things into perspective, you can easily revisit an episode of Squid Game on Netflix after replenishing your battery juice for 10 minutes since the device supports 45W super-fast charging. For the creatively inclined who indulge in sketching or doodling, the S-Pen, whose latency has been improved from nine milliseconds from the last Note model to 2.8 milliseconds, is as responsive as transferring material from pen to paper.
Owning a Galaxy need not cost the Earth. Samsung has also unveiled the sustainable and environmentally conscious S22 and S22+ to fuel your power of creativity and self-expression. To create a refined look, the S series’ iconic, fan-favourite Contour-Cut design that blends the camera seamlessly into the housing has been crafted to match the colour of the device’s body with a slim and symmetric metal frame. These models are the first of the S series to be made with Armor Aluminum (also the brand’s strongest aluminium frame), so you can carry them everywhere with peace of mind. Colours of the devices range from Phantom Black, Phantom White and Green to Pink Gold.
Streaming shows on these devices has never looked better as the 6.1in S22 and 6.6in S22+ are built in with intelligent Vision Booster technology that automatically adjusts the display to the lighting around you and enhances the colour contrast for optimum viewing pleasure. The devices’ camera specs edge out their contenders too as the Portrait Mode with the new AI Stereo Depth Map, which makes the smallest details appear crisp, can also work on your furry friend. Both phone models flaunt a powerful 50-megapixel main camera, 10-megapixel tele-lens and 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.
In a pledge to create its greenest device ever, Samsung has collaborated with leading organisations to recover discarded fishing nets and transform them into high-performance material for their smartphones. The material used in the Galaxy S22 series component key bracket contains 20% recycled ocean-bound plastic from discarded fishing nets.
Alongside the new S22 series, Samsung has introduced an all-new line of tablets to help you stay connected in every aspect of your life. Although heading to a café with nothing but a phone in your pocket can yield a productive morning as you would with a laptop, these productivity powerhouses — the Tab S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra — do all the tech heavy-lifting while catering for the ever-changing needs of those who work, study, play and create.
