The excitement was palpable during the reveal of Volvo’s new electric EX90 and hybrid XC90 SUVs at an exclusive event at the International Gallery at KLGCC Resort on April 10. Preceding the unveiling of both automobiles were speeches by managing director Chris Wailes and head of marketing operations and PR Patricia Yaw.
As Wailes explained, “[The EX90] is made to get better over time, as it is the first Volvo car to feature our new Superset tech stack. It is also the first car to incorporate lidar.” Groundbreaking programmes such as Safe Space Technology, the Driver Understanding System, and Occupant Sensing allow the vehicle to monitor and ensure the safety of both occupants and pedestrians. Equipped with fast charging, the car’s 111kWh lithium-ion battery charges from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, enabling a range of up to 623 km.
The new XC90 comes with two engine options: the Ultra T8 and the Ultra B5. As a hybrid car, it can run on electricity for shorter trips while still having a petrol engine as a backup for longer excursions. “We tried to reimagine the car to basically take everything that was good about [the previous XC90] and make it even better,” Wailes stated. Inside, it features a larger central screen with an improved user interface that displays the user’s most preferred applications. For the Ultra T8 model specifically, drivers can use this display to switch between a selection of "Drive Modes" — electric, combustion or hybrid.
The EX90 Ultra Twin retails at RM442,888 for Peninsular Malaysia and RM442,648 for East Malaysia. As for the XC90 models, the Ultra T8 is priced at RM434,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM434,457 in East Malaysia, while the Ultra B5 retails for RM418,888 and RM418,457 respectively. Scratch your EV itch by taking them for a test drive at selected authorised Volvo dealerships starting mid-April.
