The word is out. Pantone has announced that Living Coral, a bright coral shade, is its 2019 Colour of the Year. The pink-tinted hue is described as “an animated, life-affirming shade of orange, with golden undertones".
At the end of each year, Pantone names a new colour that expresses the yearnings or feeling of the time. How was this year’s decided? It’s up to the Pantone Colour Institute, Pantone’s consulting division that analyses each year’s colour trends. Case in point: Airbnb and Apple’s use of coral over the past few months is seen as a sign of the colour’s domination.
“With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, in a statement.
Coral “emits the desired, familiar and energising aspects of colour found in nature,” reads the company statement on the decision. Pantone also cited Living Coral as a colour of carefree happiness as it “symbolises our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits” — a feeling that is very much craved in today’s hostile landscape.
Since colours greatly enhance and influence the way we experience life, Living Coral “reflect what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time.” Living Coral follows the futuristic Ultra-Violet, which was Colour of the Year in 2018.
To celebrate this year’s announcement, Pantone has partnered Tribute Portfolio, a new brand of independent hotels from Marriott, to create a pop-up activation this week: Pantone Pantry by Tribute Portfolio at Art Basel Miami.
If you can’t make it to the art exhibition, take comfort in the fact that you can still wear this gorgeous, peachy hue that exudes wearability and versatility. To celebrate Pantone’s Colour of the Year, here are some products to add to your arsenal for that extra dose of positivity in your life.
