As the Paris Olympics looms, all eyes are suddenly on the Mongolian team for scoring a major sartorial triumph even before the start of the big sporting event. The unveiling of their official uniform sparked widespread praise across the internet and for good reason.
Designed by sisters Michel, Amazonka and Munkhjargal Choigaalaa under the country’s most progressive label, MichelAmazonka, the designs have shined the spotlight on Mongolia’s often-overlooked fashion scene. Drawing inspiration from their traditional outfit, the deel, they cleverly incorporate heritage motifs such as representations of the sun, moon and the gua-maral — a mythical deer — juxtaposed against Olympic symbols such as the Nine White Banners and the Olympic torch, all embroidered in gold thread.
The female flag bearer’s uniform features a robe dress paired with an embroidered vest, a drawstring handbag, heels and earrings while the other athletes will be clad in a similar embroidered vest, paired with a pleated skirt, blouse, handbag and earrings. The male flag bearer’s uniform includes a thin cotton Mongolian robe adorned with auspicious embroidery, an embroidered vest, traditional boots and an embellished belt. Meanwhile, the secondary men’s uniform comprises pants, a Mandarin collared shirt, an embroidered vest and sneakers.
The craftsmanship alone is stunning, with no tiny detail spared in the making of these uniforms. Dare we say it? MichelAmazonka has created the most beautiful Olympic ceremonial outfits of this year’s Games, almost couture-like in their exquisite design.
