There is a popular phrase on how every summer has its own story and, although Malaysia is a tropical country, it is a pretty fair comment that this year, we have an unforgettable tale to tell future generations. And it is in this light that we present our Summer 2018 edition of Haven. The mood is bright, bold and beautiful, and our spaces reflect the season as well as, in a weird and wonderful way, the sentiment of the people. Our super stylist Joanne Lim has conceptualised stunning spreads on cooking utensils in the colours of the rainbow as well as one that marries food, flatware and fabulous timepieces. Look out for them on Pages 58 and 76 respectively.
The homes and workspaces featured in this issue are also eclectic, to say the least. From the simple but technically-complex Knikno House to a stunning city duplex that is also a warm family home and a cosy new staycation condominium for a PR and fashion maven, we trust that you’d be inspired. We also spoke to two vivacious young designers who are doing exciting things with rattan — Metisse Maison’s Madeleine Grenade and Lush Home’s Siew Suet Sim. And, of course, we have compiled page after page of design-conscious buys for the home.
Melbourne has always been a quirky destination when it comes to architecture and design, so writer Shalini Yeap travelled to the Australian city to discover the best it has to offer: from design-driven coffee shops to its famous laneways adorned with street art and landmark buildings that simply ooze old-world charm. Entertaining gets a star-studded celebrity spin courtesy of the inimitable Nobu Matsuhisa, who graciously shares four recipes and speaks to our writer Lakshmi Sekhar about food, Malaysian flavours and his newly-launched memoir. Flip to page 84 to read all about it.
Given today’s busy lifestyles and fast-paced way of working, it’s always nice to know that the spaces we create are the nests we return to night after night to recharge and recalibrate. We hope that what you see and read this issue uplifts and inspires, as always.
