If you aim for the moon, you will surely land among the stars. Bell & Ross is certainly reaching new heights with its latest launch exploring the wonders of outer space. The new timepiece, named the BR-03 Astro, stands out in the watchmaker’s existing line-up with a mesmerising star-speckled dial featuring Mother Earth at the centre, flanked by the moon and Mars which orbit the blue planet as they tell the minutes and hours respectively. A tiny metallic satellite to mark the seconds can also be spotted making its rounds.
“The Cupola, the observation dome of the International Space Station, inspired this watch, which acts as a kind of porthole opening onto the planets. I imagined Earth seen from space in symbolic alignment with the Moon and Mars. The magic of this watch lies in its display — not as a technical interpretation of an instrument watch but, for once, in an imaginative dimension,” says co-founder and creative director Bruno Belamich.
To ensure a faithful and hyper-realistic depiction of the globe we call home, the dial’s sapphire glass was shaped into a spherical cap, creating the effect of volume on the decal underneath. The weight of the hands was painstakingly calculated to not only support the engraved moon, but guarantee such a unique design is paired with the utmost precision.
A black ceramic case in the house’s signature circle within a square format echoes the dark bounds of the galaxy. The watch sits on a matching black rubber strap finished with a PVD-coated steel pin buckle, promising comfort as well as practicality. Powered by automatic mechanical movement BR.CAL-327, it boasts water resistance up to 100m.
