For some, the best place for a tipple can be as simple as one’s regular joint down the street. But it can also be as complex as the sophisticated locales dedicated to pursuing the horizon of alcoholic craftsmanship and innovation, one excellent glass at a time. In recognition of the truly brilliant watering holes, The World’s 50 Best Bars has unveiled its highly anticipated annual ranking for 2024 — its 16th edition — of the greatest drinking venues across the globe. At the top of this esteemed list is Handshake Speakeasy of Mexico City, announced at a live awards ceremony on Oct 22. Its win also marked Mexico’s taking of the coveted No 1 spot for the first time.
The crowned establishment, located behind a secret door in the Colonia Juárez neighbourhood, is dressed in the bygone beauty of an old Hollywood speakeasy. Cool black marble, elegant brass detailing and moody lighting recall an Art Deco sensibility, helped by the collection of vintage spirits lining the walls. Bar director Eric van Beek’s menu stars a seamless meld of traditional and contemporary flavours and approaches, including the use of cutting-edge methods developed at its on-site lab to create an array of infusions, both familiar and subversive.
“[Handshake’s] impressive rise through the list … is a testament to its unique combination of flawless hospitality, innovative technique and truly excellent cocktails,” says Emma Sleight, head of content for The World’s 50 Best Bars. In addition to the prime placer, the city is also the proud home of bars Tlecān (No 20), Licorería Limantour (32) and Ell Gallo Altanero (48), consolidating its status as a premier cocktail destination.
