Asics Malaysia announced the brand’s first-ever foray into the local sneaker scene with a nasi lemak-inspired shoe, presented by local multi-label retail hub Hundred% and Malaysia’s biggest sneaker convention, SneakerLAH.
Retailing at RM599, the Nasi Lemak Shoe — a vibrant rendition of the GEL-KAYANO 5 OG — will be available for purchase at a limited quantity of 500 pairs exclusively at SneakerLAH 2019, which will be held from October 5 to 6 at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre.
The latest rework boasts a bold colour palette inspired by the hearty dish, including prominent pops of red and yellow representing the sambal and egg yolk, complemented by a dark green for the cucumbers against an off-white canvas reminiscent of coconut rice. Hints of brown, reflecting the nuts and anchovies, are featured on the sole.
“What we love about the shoe’s colourway re-design is that it centres on the nasi lemak, which is a dish that everyone likes and a societal knot that all Malaysians can relate to and instantly love,” said Asics Malaysia country manager Boon Tib Soom Nik.
“Through this shoe, we hope to share with everyone that feeling of unity, and to spread the love to all corners of the globe,” he added.
The origin of nasi lemak and who it belongs to have long been an unsettled argument between Malaysia and Singapore. It has spurred passionate keyboard warriors from both ends to defend their rights to the fragrant rice dish. However, earlier this January, the humble delicacy has been Google-certified as the national dish of Malaysia.
